DUTCH INDIA, United East India Company, Negapatnam, Indian Style Coinage, Hindu System, Gold pagoda, c.1747-1784, Struck at Negapatnam mint, (3.376 grams), obv. single standing deity, (probably Vishnu?), on either side bent flaps, five dots above, rev. granulated, (Scholten 1229b [p.139, Pl.XV], F.696, KM.22). Good extremely fine, rare.
Ex. Spink & Son London. Three main varieties of this granulated reverse were apparently struck at this Dutch United East India Company, Negapatam mint. The pagoda had a gold content of 0.800 from 1747-1767, 0.769 from 1767-1781 and 0.675 from 1781-1784. The type present in this example is probably of the second type (Scholten 1229b). The last type known as the Scott-Pagodas struck by the British are of a very different style (see that example in Sale 48 lot 1981).
