SOLD $800

SICILY, Syracuse, reign of Agathokles, (317-289 B.C.) and issued 305-300 B.C., silver tetradrachm, (17.204 grams), obv. head of Persephone to right, wearing wreath of corn, trisceles before, dotted border, rev. Nike standing facing to right, erecting a trophy, to right a trisceles, to left, **AGAQOKLEIOS*, (cf.S.972; McClean 2835 [p. 338, Pl.102, 2, same obverse die), cf.SNG ANS 665, cf.ACNAC Dewing 947). Minor surface scratches, obverse die breaking, otherwise very fine or better and rare.

This example shows evidence of breaking up of the obverse die. The die is also very different to the normal issue by having no obverse legend and distinctive arrangement of the hair of Persephone's.
