SULTANS OF DELHI, Shamsu-D-Din Iltutmish, (607-633 A.H., 1210-1235 A.D.), silver tankah, (10.0 grams), Lakhauti mint issued, dated VS 1277 [1219-1220], obv. Turkish horseman to left with mace, Kalina legend around, rev. five line legend, (Rajgor 846, Wright 49J, cf. Hull 43). Nearly very fine, very rare, and a strike better than most issues of this type.
Iltutmish, the architect of an independent Delhi sultanate, issued tankahs of both pictorial and purely calligraphic type. Surviving examples of the usual horseman type are generally crudely struck and somewhat worn.
