SICILY, Syracuse, (474-450 B.C.) issued c.460 B.C., silver tetradrachm, (16.54 grams), obv. slow quadriga driven to right by male charioteer holding goad, Nike flying left crowning rider, in exergue a pistrix (sea serpent), rev. **S UPA KOS ION around to right, head of Artemis - Arethusa to right, hair waved in front and turned back under a plain band, wearing a necklace, four dolphins around, (cf.S.923 [£750], Boehringer 443 [same dies V233/R319], SNG ANS 136 [same reverse die; 135 same obverse die]). Minor surface abrasion, otherwise good very fine and very rare.
Ex. Nelson Bunker Hunt Collection, sold Sotheby's New York auction June 21 1990, (lot 251 illustrated, for US$1210) and Downie's list 35 No.107 ($2500). Boehringer notes only six specimens from these dies.
