CALIGULA, (A.D. 37-41), AE as, Rome mint, issued A.D. 39-40, (11.9 grams), obv. bare head of Caligula to left, around C CAESAR AVG DIVI AVG PRON AVG P M TR P III P P, rev. very weak [VE]S[TA] above, Vesta seated to left, veiled and draped seated on ornamental throne, holding patera and transverse sceptre, S C across field, (cf.S.616, RIC 47, BMC 59). Attractive light brown patina, good very fine/very fine and very rare in this condition.
