MYSIA, Pergamon, Kingdom of, Attalos I, Soter, (241-197 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, Pergamon mint, (17.04 grams), obv. laureate head of Philetairos to right within dotted border, rev. Athena enthroned to left with her right hand resting on shield crowning **FILETAIROU, to left grapes, to right A, bow behind Athena, (S.7221, Westermark obv.Group V, obverse die LXXXV, reverse die probably R.4], Weber 5170 [same obverse die], SNG Cop. 336 [same obverse die]). Attractive even grey tone, very high relief, nearly very fine and very scarce.
Ex. Glendining's London, sale August 8, 1981 (lot 615), this example is also probably the specimen from the collection of J.P. Six of Amsterdam (same weight and very similar appearance). Westermark knew of only 23 examples from all dies of this type of Attalos I, coming from only five obverse dies.
