MAXIMINUS II (DAZA) AS CAESAR, (A.D. 309-313), gold aureus, issued 306-7, Siscia mint, obv. laureate head to right, around MAXIMIN VS NOB C, rev. PRINCIPI IVVENTVTIS, in exergue SIS, Maximinus standing to left in military dress between two standards, raising right hand and holding sceptre in left, (cf.S.3749, RIC 151, C.144). Slight double striking on the forehead, extremely fine, extremely rare.
Ex. N.F.A. auction XVIII, April 1, 1987, (lot 566) and realised US $12,650. $$ Struck from the same reverse die as the parallel issue of Constantine as Caesar, recorded as a unique example in Budapest (RIC Pl.9, 152). This reverse shows Maximinus in the typical pose of a 'Prince of the Youth', the traditional representation of a heir to the throne.
