CEYLON, United East India Company issues for Ceylon, Indian Mughal silver rupee coin countermarked at Colombo, silver rupee of Muhammad Shah (A.H.1131-1161, A.D. 1719-1748), issued AH [1131], Regal year 1 (1719), (11.1 grams), Surat mint with king's title Ba Lutf ullah Badshah-i-Zamon, (KM.434.4 type), countermarked with VOC monogram, (cf.Sch. 1285-6). Very fine for countermark and original coin, very rare.

The countermarking of the VOC monogram was applied in the 17th century (p.150-1, Scholten). A rare type Indian rupee of 1719 with this countermark indicates that the countermarking took place after this date.
