Saladin the best known ruler was in combat with Richard I of England. Saladin a Kurdish general of Mahmud ibn Zangi (Syria) had earlier annexed Egypt from the Fatimids on behalf of his master. He then declared his independence in Egypt during 564 and later annexed Syria in 570 on the death of his Zangid master.
