CHAGHATAYID (JAGATAI) KHANS, Post Reform Coinage, Kibak Khan, (A.H. 718-726) (A.D. 1318-1326), silver sixth dinar (or dirham), Bukhara mint, A.H. 724 = A.D. 1324, (A.1989, M.-). Off centred, otherwise very fine and rare.
When the Mongol Empire of Genghiz Khan was divided between his four sons at the time of his death in 624, the appanage of Transoxiana passed to Chaghatay (Jagatai) (624-639). These khans continued to rule this area until the time of Timur (771-807), but their rule degenerated into weakness and anarchy from the 730's. Until 722 all Chaghatayid (Jagatai) coins are anonymous, with only the mint and sometimes the date stated. Kibak Khan became first Chaghatayid to place his name on the coinage. He introduced a new denomination, the dinar Kebeki of about eight grams and a sixth (about 1.3 grams) the coin above, which was also known as a dirhem.
