PHILIP IV (1621-1665) COB EIGHT REALES [1651], assayer F. (CC type 85, 344;Cb.1754;Yr.1563/4). Struck on a thick dumpy flan, nearly fine and excessively rare.
The attribution to Valladolid is based upon the distinctive circles in the crown surmounting the royal arms and the layout of the royal arms themselves which tend to vary between the mints. It is noted that this mint is not listed in the British Archaelogical Report volume on the wreck, published in 1977, as being represented from the Gilt Dragon.
Estimate / sale price does not include buyer's premium (currently 22% including GST) which is added to hammer price.
