AL-RASHID, (A.H. 170-193) (A.D. 786-809), gold dinar, no mint, A.H. 184 = A.D. 800-801, type variant with additional name Ja'far (al-Barmaki) the caliph's vizier at that time on the reverse, (A.218, BMC 152). Clipped flan, slightly bent, otherwise nearly very fine and rare.

ex Glendining's May 22, 1980, (lot 428 part). al-Rashid was the caliph about whom the `Thousand and One Nights' was composed, memorialised in the ballet Scheherezade.
