PAMPHYLIA, Side, (c.200 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (16.46 grams), obv. Athena to right wearing Corinthian helmet, rev. Nike advancing to left, KL EY across, in field to left a pomegranate, countermark of Seleucid anchor in right field, (SNG Von Aulock 4795 for Magistrate, 4796 for countermark, S.5434). Very fine.

These tetradrachms from Side often bear countermarks, one of the more remarkable is the Seleucid anchor. The Latakie Hoard of 1759 had an example from Side with this countermark, and also other finds of dated coins from Aspendos with this countermark, consequently this has allowed the attributed of the countermark to the period 174-170 B.C.
