MELBOURNE CENTENNIAL INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION, 1888, in silver (52mm), edge impressed 'DR.CHAS.S.RYAN'. In case of issue. Edge bump. Very fine.
Sir Charles Snodgrass Ryan, born 1853 at Killeen Station, Longwood Victoria, educated Melbourne Grammar School. Started medical degree 1870, completed it in Edinburgh 1875. Served with the Turks in the Russo/Turkish War 1877/78, becoming a Russian P.O.W. Returned to Melbourne 1878 and held several medical posts.Appointed Director Medical Service A.I.F., served at Gallipoli. Honorary Surgeon General to the A.M.F., returned to Australia in 1919 then went on retired list as a Major General, CB 1919, CMG & KBE 1919. Died 1919. His daughter Maie married Lord Casey.
