CENTENNIAL INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION, Melbourne, 1888, in bronze (76mm) by Stokes & Martin. Edge inscribed 'JACOB COHN ESQ'. Nearly very fine.
The Cohn brothers arrived on the Bendigo goldfields in 1853 from Denmark. Jacob Cohn built the Criterion Hotel Sandhurst in 1854, selling it in 1857 he used the proceeds to found the Victorian Brewery in the same year. The Victorian Brewery bought the established aerated water factory in 1888 and commenced manufacturing aerated water-this business became known as Cohn Bros. Bendigo in Nov 1891. The business continued to grow and many more hotels and businesses were bought by the brothers. The brewing interest of Cohn Bros. was sold to Carlton & United Brewery in 1925. The original Bendigo factory is today operated by Amatil Ltd as a Coca Cola and Soft drinks factory. With research.
