UNITED STATES, Medal Commemorating the Battle of the Wilderness 5-6 May 1864. Silver and enamel shield shaped medal bearing crossed anchor and cannon on obverse and engraved on reverse 'Captain Thomas Rumley Keenan, formerly of the 13th, 17th and 56th Reg't's Mass, Inf't'y son of the late Thomas Keenan M.D. of Lynnefield Mass; formerly of Birr, Ireland, died at Winchester Mass; Nov. 15th 1868, from the effects of a wound received at the Battle of the Wilderness, while serving in the 56th.' Very fine and rare.
