MADRAS PRESIDENCY, British Style Coinage system, Gold mohur or ashrafi, issued 1819, struck at Madras mint, (11.63 grams), obv. EIC arms with suporters, around ENGLISH EAST INDIA COMPANY, rev. in Persian 'Ashrafi (or Mohur) of the Honourable English Company', (Pr. 241, KM. 421). Extremely fine, scarce.
Ex. Wreck of the 'Fame' (with its ticket), and Glendining's June 16, 1971 (lot 132). $$ The issue was 1,117,800. The 'Fame' was an English Sailing ship of 629 tons, which was driven onto the rocks at Sea Point, Table Bay, Cape Town, on the 14th June 1822. This coin and the other coins in this sale from this wreck were recovered in October 1965. The ticket that is included in this and other 'Fame' lots are certification tickets with full description signed by Frank Mitchell, Past President of the South African Numismatic Society.
