SYRIA, Kingdom of, Antiochus X, (94-92 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (16.05 grams), Antioch mint, obv. diademed head of Antiochus X to right, fillet border, rev. Zeus naked to waist, enthroned to left, holding wreath bearing Nike in outstretched right hand, all within laurel wreath to right, BASILEOS ANTIOXOY and to right EVSEBOVS FILOPATOROS, to left monogram O on S, (S.7182, Newell SMA 430, BMC 2). Good very fine, scarce.
Seleucus VI, who ruled at Antioch in 95-94 B.C., had a considerable struggle against his uncle Cyzicenus, who he ultimately killed. His death resulted in his adult son Antiochus to assert his claim to the throne and declared himself king as Antiochus X Eusebes Philopator. He gathered an army to attack Seleucus VI in Antioch and drove him into flight. Antiochus X was now ruler in antioch and struck a few coins in his name. He was in 92 B.C. attacked by the brothers Demetrius and Philip who defeated him. He fled to the Parthians. Newell notes a total of 17 tetradrachms of all types in public and private collections of this ruler
