MAXIMINUS II AS CAESAR, (A.D. 310), folles, (7.28 grams), Antioch mint, obv. helmeted bust to left, spear over right shoulder, decorated shield on left arm, around MAXIMINVS NOB CAES, rev. SOLE IN VICTO, in field A in exergue ANT, Sol radiate and in long robe standing facing head left hands raised in facing quadriga, two horses turning each way, (S.-, RIC 140). Near extremely fine and very rare.
This issue is not published in RIC for this officinae. The issue of this type from Antioch occurred in 310 and it identifies Maximinus II as both Caesar and Augustus. The very rare type naming him as Caesar is deliberate. He was Augustus from early 309, consequently his change of rank was a demotion, being for a very short time, probably as a consequence of Maximianus being proclaimed as emperor for the third time, also in 310.
