Lot 4571       Great Britain Gold

Estimate $4,500
Bid at live.noble.com.au
SOLD $4,200

EDWARD V, (April-May 1483), angel, London mint, with m.m. halved sun and rose, with E and rose on each side of the ship's mast, saltire stops in legend, (S.2144, N.1670). Good very fine and extremely rare.

The consensus of opinion now favours the last year of Edward IV for the introduction of the halved sun and rose mintmark, but it is also suggested that all the coins of Edward V's reign were also struck from dies bearing this mint mark. Recent research indicates that the mint mark of the boar's head on the obverse and halved sun and rose on the reverse are now attributable to Richard III.
