GALLO-BELGIC IMPORTED TO BRITAIN, uniniscribed coinage, Gallo-Belgic E, Ambiani type, issued during Gallic War, (c.58-51 B.C.), gold stater, (6.07 grams), obv. blank, rev. crude celticized disjointed horse to right, with separate pellets and crescents in exergue, (S.7, Norweb Sylloge No.5 [THIS COIN], same reverse die as Yorkshire Sylloge 845, Van A. 52-1). Good very fine and rare.
Ex. V.M. Brand Collection, E.M. Norweb Collection and Spink London Sale 45 (lot 1). $$ In a paper 'The Origins of Coinage in Britain' Dr. John Kent suggests that the date for the Gallo-Belgic E series should be revised to that given above, and quotes Simone Scheers to suggest that this coinage represents the last independent coinage of the Belgae in Gaul, struck to specifically finance the war with Caesar.
