BANK OF VAN DIEMEN'S LAND, Hobart Town, one pound, not dated (18- printed), not numbered, proof, unsigned, stamped SPECIMEN, on card, no watermark, imprint of 'Perkins Bacon & Co. London Patented Hardened Steel Plate', vignette on left, of farming scene and distant ships, and ornamental oval tablet with ONE on upper right and ONE in rectangular tablet lower left, all within rectangular ornate spiral border, states below, 'We promise ..... For the President & Company of the Branch', black on white, (Vort-Ronald, Type three, comments on bank and type p.108-112, similar note but Ã…â€Å‣5 illustrated Fig. 118 [p.112], no examples from bank in the Spink Perkins Bacon Archive sale). Some ink marks on back, otherwise extremely fine and very rare.

Note the similarity of design to the previous note described above. The Bank of Van Diemen's Land (1823-1891) issued these notes from 1870 (Vort-Ronald), but the proof could have been prepared from the mid 1850's when Perch was not part of the printer's name (see Union Bank proof fifty pounds dated March 1854 with the same imprint). A Similar vignette has been in use from early in the bank's history (see example of 1832 forgery in this sale from this bank).
