WESTERN AUSTRALIAN BANK, Perth, Western Australia, one pound, dated 1 Jany 1896, (date fully printed), numbered No D/137345, signed James Mitchell, manager and countersigned by J. Shaw, on paper, no watermark, imprint of 'Bradbury Wilkinson & Co Engravers &c London', vignette of swan in wreath, and ornamental oval tablets with 'ONE' on upper left and right, all within rectangular ornate spiral border inscribed 'WESTERN AUSTRALIAN BANK' above and 'PERTH' below, states below, 'On Demand I Promise to pay the Bearer One Pound Sterling at Perth. For the Western Australian Bank', with blue 'ONE POUND' across centre of note, on back '1' in three geometric circles all within block, blue and black on white/blue on white, (Vort-Ronald, Type three (c), comments on bank and type p.235-8, similar issued note illustrated Fig. 243 [p.237]). Corner missing, fold holes, heavy folds and creases, otherwise nearly fine and very rare.

The Western Australian Bank (1841-1927), was a successful bank, which in 1927 amalgamated with the Bank of New South Wales. A few notes from the bank archives in recent years have made the issue available to a few collectors. James Mitchell the signatory as Manager on this note, later became the Premier of Western Australia. A similar note was in Spink Noble Numismatics sale 38 (lot 2832).
