MACEDON, Kingdom of, Alexander III, (336-323 B.C.), gold distater, (16.55 grams), Aegeae mint, issued 336-323 B.C., obv. head of Athena to right in crested Corinthian helmet, rev. Nike standing to left, holding wreath in outstretched hand, LO monogram under wing, thunderbolt to left upright, around to left weakly ALEXANDPOU, (S.6701; Price 191, M.5, BMC 191a-b, SNG Cop. 623). Has been mounted, light surface scratches on reverse, otherwise fine and very rare.

A lifetime issue of Alexander III of a very rare denomination, being the heaviest gold coin to this date.
