SICILY, Syracuse, (c.405-393 B.C.), silver tetradrachm by Eucleidas, (15.74 grams), obv. galloping quadriga driven to left by male charioteer holding goad, Nike flying right crowning rider, in exergue grain ear, rev. **SUPAKOSION around but off flan, head of Artemis-Arethusa to left, hair tied in spendone, four dolphins around, (cf.S.955 [Ã…â€Å‣2000], Tudeer 87 [same dies, obv.32, rev.59], SNG ANS 1379 [same dies], Boston 419 [same dies], Hirsch Sale sale 32, 14-5/11/1912, Pl. XIII, [lots 343-5 same dies]). Very porous flan, double struck on the reverse, otherwise nearly very fine, rare, dies of the finest style.
Unsigned dies by the artist Eucleidas one of the great master engravers of Greek coinage, attributed to him as the obverse is muled to a signed reverse die. Tudeer notes 16 specimens from these dies.
