'1940' engraved on DFC, 257415 K.W.Kaufman on fourth, fifth and sixth medals. Last three medals impressed, others unnamed. Very fine.

F/Lt 39464 RAF 214 Squadron. 03Sep1934 No.1 Flying Training School Point Cook, 1936 Air Cadet, 1937 Short service commission in the RAF, May1937 No.214 Squadron, 1938 Central Flying School, 1939 Staff duties with the Air Ministry, 1940 No.142 Squadron RAF, 03Aug1941 Flight Lieutenant, 01Dec1941 Squadron Leader, 1942 Acting Wing Commander, 02Sep1942 Commanding Officer No.460 Squadron, Dis. 31Oct1944. DFC.L.G.: 24Dec1940 'Flight Lieutenant K.W.Kaufman No.214 Squadron. Over a period of four months Flight Lieutenant Kaufman has continually displayed unswerving determination and tenacity in locating and attacking targets allotted to him. A succesful attack on a Berlin factory is only one of the notable successes achieved by this officer in 26 major operational flights carried out since 25th June 1940. By his skill as Captain of aircraft and his general thoroughness and perserverance in dangerous circumstances Flight Lieutenant Kaufman has set a very high standard of devotion to duty'. Bar to DFC.L.G.: 06Nov1942 RAFO No.142 Sqn 'By his fearless determination and complete disregard of enemy opposition Wing Commander Kaufman has set an inspiring example to his crew. On one occasion when alone over a heavily defended area of the Ruhr, he was caught in a cone of searchlights and his aircraft was hit in several places by anti-aircraft fire. Skilfully extricating himself with great determination this officer penetrated further into the enemy's territory and bombed his target'.
