THRACE, Kingdom of, Lysimachos, (323-281 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (16.808 grams), Lysimachia mint, issued after 282-281 B.C., obv. head of Alexander to right, with diadem and horn of Ammon, rev. Athena enthroned to left, supporting Nike, spear behind, lion's head left over KO, monogram on throne **MUO*, to right **BASILEWS*, to left **LUSIMAXO[U]*, (cf.S.6814, M.46 (suggest this mint), Thompson -). Well centred, very fine/good very fine and very rare.
Ex Spink America, Auction Sale, June 3, 1997 (lot 487). The lion's head is characteristic of several mints and could equally belong to Amphipolis mint, but while many similar monograms are noted by Thompson, this one is not identified as a life time issue.
