GAIUS (CALIGULA), (A.D. 37-41), AE as, Rome mint, issued A.D. 37-38, (11.58 grams), obv. bare head of Caligula to left, around C CAESAR AVG GERMANICVS PON M TR POT, rev. VESTA above, Vesta seated to left, veiled and draped seated on ornamental throne, holding patera and transverse sceptre, S C across field, (S.1803 [VF £250], RIC 38, C.27, BMC 46). Attractive dark patina, some surface pitting, otherwise very fine and rare in this condition.
