Bid at live.noble.com.au
SCOTLAND, Charles I, (1625-1649), gold half unit, third coinage by Briot, mm. broken B or F, ornate bust to left, issued 1637-1642, (S.5534 var., Burns No.6 p.483 vol.II with the same mintmark flaw and from the same dies). Round with full flan good extremely fine/extremely fine, knock on fourth quadrant of shield, the variety is extremely rare.
Burns has the comment that this issue has a waxy appearance. The variety is noted by its lack of dot before R and a small x in REX. The mintmark could be confused as a F but is more like a reversed P and may be a very deteriorated B.
