ANGUILLA, Provisional Government, July 11, 1967, Liberty dollar, countermarked on Mexico five pesos 1948, (Bruce X2). Coin very good - fine, countermark very fine.
Anguilla declared independence on July 11, 1967 and seceded from the Federation. Britain refused to accept the declaration and appointed an administrator. In February 1969 they removed the British ties and established a Republic of Anguilla. Britain retook the island and eventually a new Constitution in 1976 established Anguilla as a self-governing British dependent territory. The above issues were authorised by the Anguilla Island Council. Each had been redeemed for ten U.S. dollars. The countermarking was done by a private firm in San Francisco, California.
