SICILY, Selinus, (540/530-510 B.C.), silver didrachm, (8.824 grams), obv. selinon leaf, with pellets to left and right below, rev. incuse square divided into eight sections, (S.730, ANS MN 33, Pl. 2, No.30, SNG ANS 681, BMC 5). Attractive grey tone struck on a broad flan, very fine or better and a rare variety.

Ex CNG Auction Sale 61, September 25, 2002 (lot 369). Similar coins come from the Selinus Archaic Silver Hoard (this hoard contained 35 coins of Selinus, the most ever found of this mint in a hoard of 165 silver coins and four silver ingots). The hoard was buried between 510-500 B.C. and is consequently the earliest of its kind ever found in Sicily. The reverse die on this coin is similar dies to that noted above in the hoard.
