ATTICA, Athens, (166-57 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (15.478 grams), issued 181-180 B.C., (Thompson date) but probably 149-8 B.C. (revised chronology), obv. head of Athena Parthenos to right wearing triple-crested Athenian helmet, ornamented with Pegasus, rev. owl standing to right, head facing, in erect posture with palm branch over shoulder, on prostrate amphora, legend across **A QE, to left **PO/lU*, to right TI with monogram **MDR*, all within wreath, (cf.S.2555, Thompson 108a [same dies], SNG von Post 102 [same dies]), Obverse porosity and scratches, otherwise fine and very rare (the second know example from these dies.
Thompson records 44 known tetradrachms of the palm over owl type from 10 obverse dies and 35 reverse dies.
