SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS, (A.D. 193-211), AE as, Rome mint, issued A.D. 208, (9.40 grams), obv. laureate head of Septimius Severus to right, around traces of SEVERVS PIVS AVG, rev. around P M TR P XVI, with COS III P P over S C in exergue, bridge of single curved span, flanked by triple triumphal arches surmounted by statuary, five figures crossing bridge, boat in river below, (S.6472, RIC 786a, C.523). Somewhat pitted surface, dark patina, nearly fine/fine and very rare.

An important coin of architectural significance. It is believed to be connected certain with the departure from Rome of the Imperial party going to Britain and as a consequence is probably the famous Milvian bridge which crosses the Tiber to the north of the city. A good very fine example of this coin realised Euros 4000 in the Fritz Rudolf Kunker Auction 124 (March 16, 2007, lot 9246).
