SHOOTING MEDAL: 4th Regt LLV. Hand engraved regimental crest on obverse with hallmark on rim. On the reverse at the top is engraved 'The Gift of Lieut. Ayres'. Below this is a wreath surmounted by a powder horn and inside the wreath is the inscription 'Light Infantry / Commanded by / Capt. Hodgkinson. / This Medal was presented / to Mr. James Purkis / being the Best Shot / on Novr. 24 / 1808.' On the bottom rim is engraved 'Engrav'd by J. Porter Junr 122 Fleet Street.' (53mm). Sterling silver. Very fine.
