OXFORD VS HARVARD MEDAL, silver (50mm) by J. Gilliam, London, Aug. 27 1869, awarded for the Great International Challenge Rowing Contest between Oxford University, England and Harvard University, U.S.A. Holed at top for loop and neck ribbon. Although unnamed this medal is attributed to A.C. Yarborough, a national rower, who emigrated to New Zealand in the early 1870s. Very fine and rare.
In 1869 Harvard University issued a challenge to Oxford University and Cambridge University to row a four-oared match to be held on the Thames starting at Putney and finishing at Mortlake. Oxford accepted and the race was held on 27 August with the river lined with spectators along the course. Harvard led but eventually Oxford reined them in and won by three lengths. On 30 August a dinner was held for the respective crews at the Crystal Palace followed by a pyrotechnic display. Charles Dickens was the guest speaker at the dinner. The teams were, Oxford: F. Willan (bow), A.C. Yarborough, J.C. Tinne and S. Darbishire (stroke); Harvard: J.S. Fay (bow), E.G. Lyman, W.H. Simmons and A.P. Loring (stroke). After settling in New Zealand, A.C. Yarborough was appointed the first Chairman of the County of Hokianga from 1876 onwards. With research which includes a photo of A.C. Yarborough.
