THE SEAL OF THE ARCHDEACON OF VAN DIEMEN'S LAND, 1836-1841, silver set in brass (33mm x 26mm) with an elaborate finely turned wooden handle, central Royal Coat of Arms - The Archbishop of Van Diemens Land. Good vey fine and very rare.
Ex Philip Kennedy Collection 1973 (lot M126). William Hutchins (1791-1841) first and only Archdeacon of Van Diemen's Land. He died in office just before the Colony made a See with the appointment of a Bishop on 21st August 1842. In March 1836 Van Diemen's Land was created an Archdeaconry. Together with newspaper clipping 'Sydney Morning Herald' 13.3.1934, plus copy of a letter, also wax impressions from the seal.
