WILLIAM BRANWHITE CLARKE MEMORIAL AWARD, in bronze (55mm), obverse, William Branwhite Clarke M.A. F.R.S. 1870, reverse, The Royal Society of New South Wales, Sydney, For / Researches / in / Natural / Science'. Slight edge bruise on reverse, otherwise FDC.
William Branwhite Clarke (1798-1878). Arrived in Australia in 1839. For his great knowledge of Australian Geology and his scientific writings he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and was a founder of the Royal Society of the New South Wales. His valuable collection of Australian fossils and minerals that was acquired by the Government after his death were destroyed with his scientific library in the Garden Palace fire of 1882.
