VICTORIAN HUMANE SOCIETY, 1876, award medal in silver (38mm) by J.Hogarth F.-G.Turner D., with scroll suspender, blue ribbon with silver brooch at top featuring the unofficial Australian Coat of Arms, inscribed on reverse 'Thomas J Bennett / 11 August 1876'. With case of issue and letter from the Royal Humane Society of Australasia. Very fine and very rare.
Thomas John Bennett, ten year old schoolboy, Murchison, jumped into the Goulburn River at high flood with his clothes on to rescue his sister Susan, aged five, who was being carried out into the stream, depth of water about thirty feet. This medal was presented by the Right Reverend Dr Moorhouse Bishop of Melbourne. Only twenty seven silver medals were awarded before the Victorian Humane Society became the Royal Humane Society of Australasia in 1883.
