Pte Hjalmar Nyman 5th Aust Pioneer Battalion. Born Helsingfors, Finland. Enl.29Feb1916 RTA 06Sep1919 MM LG 17Jun1919 p.7698, 'On the morning of the 6th September 1918, to the North West of Tincourt, No 1221, Pte Hjalmar Nyman was advancing with his Platoon when he located an enemy machine gun and snipers post on the flank. He immediately got together the nearest Lewis Gun team, and, acting entirely on his own initiative, himself advanced with the team against the enemy, eventually causing their retirement, and inflicting heavy casualties on them. His prompt action on this occasion, saved many casualties amongst his Platoon. His coolness, courage and absolute disregard of personal safety, set a fine example to the remainder of the men.'
