EGYPT, Kingdom of, Ptolemy I (323-283 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (15.476 grams), issued 310-305 B.C., obv. head of Alexander to right with horn of Ammon, clad in elephant skin and aegis, dotted border, **L* under head on aegis, rev. **ALEXANDROU* on left, Athena Alkidemos to right with spear and shield, monograms XA on right to extreme right helmet, eagle off flan lower right, (cf.S.7750, Sv.162, Zervos 28, SNG Cop. 29). Attractive grey cabinet patina, otherwise extremely fine and rare.
Ex Spink & Son, London, December 1997 and D.G.L. Worland Collection. The signature of the moneyer **L* is most unusual as most signed types are **D*. This specimen was examined by the British Museum in December 1997. The British Museum confirmed the attribution.
