(VESPASIAN - TITUS), Moesia & Thrace, period of Vespasian and Titus (A.D. 69-79; 79-81), various types, (8.382, 10.316, 5.844, 6.786 grams), AE as with countermarks of TI.CAE, AVG, helmet and dolphin for the first coin; similar for the second, third and fourth coins, all on asses of Augustus, (Martini, No.83, 90, 95, 98 as countermark types in Pangerl Collection of Countermarked Imperial coins). Countermarks very good - very fine, host coin poor - fair and all scarce, each coin with descriptive tickets. (4)
Martini notes the letters which he believes to mean TI(tus?) C(aesar) A(ugustus) and AVG(ustus). He notes these issues as struck generally on issues of Augustus as is this issue with SC in centre. Martini places the issue of this type to the period of Vespasian and Titus. It was in a Thrace-Moesia area that these countermarks were applied to circulating worn coinage.
