SOLD $90
THRACE-MACEDONIA, Uncertain but probably Maroneia, (c.500 B.C.), silver tetrobol, (2.07 grams), obv. forepart of horse to right, with a crude stylized mane and clear legs, rev. quadripartite incuse square, the surfaces of the quarterings irregular and sunk, (cf.S.1343, cf.AMNG III, 2, p.136, Pl.XXVII,34], cf.Schonert-Geiss 3 [p.119], cf.Kraay 543 [p.154, Pl.56]). Some porosity and corrosion, otherwise good fine and very rare.
The issue is very close to the issue of similar weight and style of Maroneia. A forepart of a horse with similar quadripartite incuse square on the reverse is known for that city in a stater (Babelon I, Pl.LVII, 3, Schonert-Geiss 3 [p.119]). The issue could also fit into the issues prior to Macedonian kings.
