Seymour Vivian (Sam) Herford, 1912-1983, swimmer, surf lifesaver and olympic swimming coach was born at Manly, Sydney. He was a member of the Manly Surf Lifesaving Club and came second in the Australian under-18 surf lifesaving title in the 1930-31 season, was a member of the Manly team that won the open teams title in 1931-32 and then he won the the open individual surf title in 1932-33. Herford was also an A grade distance swimmer with the Manly Amateur Swimming Club being a member of the team that won the 880 yards freestyle relay at the State Swimming Championships from 1932-1935. From 1932 to 1935 he secured placings in the one mile event at State level winning the event in 1933. He also competed in the National Championships from 1934 to 1936 winning the national title over 440 yards, 880 yards and one mile in the 1935 season. He was an accredited Australian coach for the 1956 Melbourne and 1960 Rome Olympic Games at which two of his swimmers, Murray Rose and John Devitt were victorious. He was also a coach for Australia's Commonwealth Games swimming team in 1958 and 1962. Sam Herford was recognised posthumously in 1992 when he was inducted as an 'Honour Coach' by the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Ex Dr Barrie Towers Collection.
