This is a unique item reporting the financial history by official and private documents between individuals and the The Treasury in London. Many are printed on official printed forms from the Commissariat Office in Hobart and others from the accounts of the Lt. Governor or his auditor of civil accounts as nominee. The sight notes in many cases record the ships and departure dates for the first and second exchange notes. Bills of exchange are orders in writing by one person, or authority, to pay a specific sum to another person or bearer sometimes by a particular date. The bill of exchange is an unconditional order in writing addressed to a person to pay on demand the specified sum of money. Consequently we have a drawer of the bill (from) to a drawee (via - usually a bank or Treasury) to a payee (receiver). The use of bills of exchange enables one person to transfer to another an enforceable right to that sum of money. It can be transferable or negotiable to others as well. Usually three bills were prepared for each exchange - one staying with the drawer or issuer, one with the payee and the other staying with the drawee.
