From a total mintage of only 975 pieces of each metal. Ivan’s grand-aunt Empress Anna adopted the eight week old Ivan and declared him her successor a few days before her death. In late 1740 Elizabeth Petrovna seized power and imprisoned Ivan in a series of fortified buildings, where he remained long after her death. In July 1764 a plan to free him (hatched by a sub-lieutenant of his guards) failed and led to his murder.
