BOMBAY PRESIDENCY, Indian design, Surat mint, 1800-1815, in the name of Shah Alam II (A.H. 1173-1221, A.D. 1759-1806), gold mohur, (11.56 grams), with frozen Regnal year 4[6], privy mark No.1 (three lozenges, one over two), dumpy flan, early issue, without A.H. date, (Pr. 250, KM.214, BMC 87-89). Extremely fine, rare.
Ex Ex R.A. Climpson Collection Noble Numismatics Sale 85 (lot 2095), previously from the Colin E. Pitchfork Collection, Noble Numismatics Sale 48 (lot 2102) with his ticket. The E.I.C. took over the Surat mint in November 1800, so that Regnal year 46, which began 29th July 1803, is an error (See Pridmore pp.126-7), though this was a standard type for both gold and silver issues at Surat and Bombay.
Estimate / sale price does not include buyer's premium (currently 22% including GST) which is added to hammer price.
