GERMANY, Munster, medal in silver by Johann Blum, 1649, 43mm, (22.69 grams), to commemorate the Treaty of Westphalia in Munster and Osnabruck on 14th October 1648, obv. the goddess of peace holding olive branch and horn trampling the god of war, German text around, rev. hands emerging from clouds holding a flaming heart, doves below, Hebrew above, German text around. (cf. Pax 120-121 Nummis). Good very fine and rare.
Johann Blum was a medallist residing in Bremen, active between 1631 and 1660. He cut a number of commemorative pieces for the Houses of Saxony, Brunswick and Orange. This piece commemorating the peace of Munster incorporates a rare reverse type reminiscent of contemporary wedding medallions.
