THE BANK OF ADELAIDE, one pound, Adelaide, 1st June 1893, 1285781, two ink signatures of Powell and Newman (MVR.3). Punch hole 'CANCELLED' twice, multiple folds and creases, otherwise fine and rare.
Together with (1) wooden desk name plate 'Mr Newman'; (2) metal deed/cash box with name 'C W Newman' painted thereon; (3) hard plastic desk name plate 'Mr W.F.Belford'. The one pound note that is countersigned by A Newman would have been signed by him when he worked in the note issue section of The Bank of Adelaide, Perth branch prior to 1910 when the Commonwealth Government of Australia assumed all note issuing powers. Subsequently Mr Archibald G Newman became manager of the Perth branch in the mid to late 1920s. When he retired in 1946 he presented this note, that had been on display in a frame in the banking chamber, to W F Belford who had joined the bank in 1941. The other items, Mr Newman's wooden name plate and the deed box of his daughter, Claire, similar to others held in the branch security strongroom, were acquired by W F Belford to complement his Bank of Adelaide one pound note. The other item, W F Belford's name plate, was issued to him and used until he retired on 4 February 1984. Ex W F Belford.
