C. MAMILIUS LIMETANUS, (c.82 B.C.), silver denarius, Rome mint, (3.55 grams), obv. Mercury bust to right, caduceus behind, A above, rev. Ulysses walking to right, his dog before, [C. MAMIL] behind, LIMETAN before, (S.282 [o85 VF], Cr.362/1, Syd.741, RSC Mamilia 6). Lightly toned, banker's mark on cheek, nearly very fine and scarce.
The reverse depicts Ulysses returning to Ithaca after years of absence, where he was recognised by his old dog Argus who promptly died of joy. A total of 100 obverse dies has been calculated by Crawford for this issuer. The gens Mamilia claimed descent from Ulysses.
