MUWAHHIDS, (Almohades), Abu Mohammad `Abd al-Mu'min, (A.H. 524-558) (A.D. 1130-1163), gold half dinar, no mint stated issued from A.H. 540 to 558 = A.D. 1145-1163, (A.478, Hazard 466, M.399-400, BMC 86-87, Lavoix 715-716). Of fine style, nearly extremely fine and scarce.
The founder of the Muwahhids (Almohades) Mohammed ibn Tumart was an ascetic reforming mahdi who led a mass movement in Morocco. His deputy this ruler `Abd al Mu'min established the Muwahhid realm, occupying Marrakesh from the Almoravids in 541. They also established a Spanish capital in Seville and a North African capital in Fes. All coins of the Almohades and their Maghrebi successors until the rise of the Sa'dians in the mid 16th century are invariably undated.
